1. Week 2: molpigs reading group “Revisiting the Classics”
The molpigs reading group “revisiting the classics” is inspired by the special panel session at DNA28, ‘A tribute to Ned Seeman’. We heard how Ned’s paper influenced other researchers, and later development of the DNA Nanotechnology field. Prof. Hao Yan emphasized that there are a lot of foundational knowledge and interesting ideas in Ned’s early papers. We are currently running a reading group to read seven of Ned Seeman’s papers over seven weeks.
For week 2, we are going to discuss “B.H. Robinson and N.C. Seeman, The Design of a Biochip: A Self-Assembling Molecular-Scale Memory Device. Protein Engineering 1, 295-300 (1987)” Please come with thoughts/questions/ideas/whatever in mind, and we will have a gathering and discussion session!
We will have 2 groups on Tuesday (Oct 18th 19:00 UTC) and Thursday (Oct 20th 16:00 UTC). Please pick the one that works for you and register by contacting us.
- The Tuesday group is led by Boya and Erik.
- The Thursday group is led by Julie and Javier.
If there is any question about a specific group (content, zoom link, etc.), feel free to contact the organizers leading that group.

David Doty has a PhD position available for Fall 2023 at the University of California, Davis in DNA nanotechnology software. The ideal candidate has a background in computer science/computer engineering/software engineering (either through a formal degree, or experience with programming) and would join the Computer Science department. However, depending on background and career goals, it would also be feasible to apply to the departments of either Applied Mathematics or Biomedical Engineering. The project will involve
- Scientific software development, for instance on scadnano for structural DNA nanotech design, and nuad for DNA sequence design.
- Algorithmic and modeling research in support of DNA sequence design.
- Collaborations with partner institutions on wet-lab experiments in nucleic acid strand displacement and self-assembly to tune the modeling and design software.
